ReplyDeleteUnder the eyes of God all humans are created equally. However, many people believe different, and sometimes even a country. The United States and most of Europe believed in cultural superiority, imperialism, and it showed in their foreign policies. The U.S. took over some parts of Latin America and the Philippines. Europeans took over all of Africa, except for two countries. Europe and the U.S. strictly enforced their foreign policies believing to be culturally superior, and influenced by imperialism. Both the U.S. and Europe acted based on their self interest. Their foreign policies killed many foreigners, and relationships between countries diminished worldwide.
The U.S. foreign policy stated that the U.S. served as an international police force. However, the policy mainly protected the U.S. economic interest in Latin America. The U.S. intervened in Latin America on several occasions. By intervening the U.S. almost went to war against Mexico, and it did go to war against Spain and the Philippines. The U.S. only intervened in Latin America to construct the Panama Canal. With the Panama Canal built the U.S. would become an economic empire, and American imperialist wished to build it at all costs.
Unlike the U.S., the entire European continent united and took over Africa. Europeans established a foreign policy without Africans consent. Europe’s foreign policy only benefited Europeans, and the policy damaged much of Africa. Millions of Africans died under European rule, and Europeans seemed to not care. During this time Europeans strongly believed in Social Darwinism, or “Survival of the fittest.” Social Darwinism gave Europeans an attitude of being racists to Africans. Europeans merely viewed Africa as a continent full of riches and vast land. African people did not matter to Europeans. Europeans only cared for what they wanted.
Both the U.S. and Europe felt culturally superior to the lands they took over. The U.S. and Europe only looked to benefit their self interest by establishing foreign policies in Africa, Latin America, and the Philippines. The foreign policies only benefited the U.S. and Europe. Many Africans, Latin Americans, And Filipinos died because of the foreign policies, and their cultures were given no respect or significance. The U.S. and Europe abused their power and technological advances. However, American and European imperialists did not feel guilty of the wrong in their policies. American and European imperialist felt that as long as the U.S. and Europe benefited economically that no wrong was being done to the foreign countries, and you can’t blame them after all they are “culturally superior.”

Foreign Policy compare and contrast
Foreign policy served as a big issue for both Europe and America. Foreign policy for both places had to do with controlling or running another area. Each nation dealt with different areas in the world. Europe dealt with Africa while the United States dealt with Latin America. Both Europe and the United States handled their foreign policy similarly despite dealing with separate areas.
Both the United States and Europe looked down on the nation they tried to control. Europe saw the Africans as inferior because of the color of their skin. The Europeans even thought the Africans could not run their own government. The United States did not respect the Latin Americans. The United States looked at the cultures of Latin America as if their cultures had inferior qualities.
Europe and the United States also took resources from the nations they dealt with. Europe went into Africa to take rubber. They also ended up taking diamonds and gold. The United States took crops and products from the nations of Latin America and sent them to the United States.
Each the United States and Europe controlled their wanted nation indirectly. Both Europe and the United States didn’t actually stay in the area that they controlled. They each stayed in their own country yet still maintained control over the nation. Europe and The United States still ran the other nation’s government and markets.
These ideas show how the United States and Europe dealt with their foreign policy. They each used similar tactics over their foreign areas. Because of this foreign control, you still see some lasting effects such as Caucasian people in South Africa.
The Europeans and the United States shared similarities when it came to foreign policies but it also shared their differences. The similarities they shared were cultural superioty and Social Darwinism and they both treated the people harshly. The other things that had in common were they both were an indirect rule and had a Sphere of Influence. The differences in foreign policies with the Europeans in Africa were that they took over Africa with machine guns. They also were a direct rule and they enslaved Native Americans. When the Europeans came to Africa they tried to spread Christianity. Another reason the Europeans went to Africa was because they wanted gold and diamonds. The Americans differences when they decided to take over Latin America were because of fueling stations and naval ports. The United States was an indirect rule to Latin America the United States also wanted new markets. I don’t agree with foreign policy because I think it’s wrong to take over a place by force and to kill a lot of people just for an island or country. Another reason why I don’t agree with foreign policy is because the Americans and Europeans treated the people very harshly and were unfair and should have let the people have more rights and more freedom to their own country or island.

European and American Foreign Policy
Achieving foreign policy between different countries can be done indirectly or directly. Both policies called to gain and acquire new products and different means of treatment for the Natives and Africans.
The U.S and European foreign policies were indirect. The European policy became indirect after realizing direct policy failed to fulfill their duties. This form of government became noticeable as a colony, protectorate, and sphere of influence. Being in indirect control, local government officials were used, it limited self-rule, their goal became understandable to develop future leaders, and government institutions were based on European styles but have local rule.
The U.S. wanted new markets that would bring in new products that develop into money. The U.S. also wanted naval bases and fueling stations for the military. Europeans searched for gold, diamonds, and they wanted to bring Christianity into civilization. Europeans wanted the rich mineral resources that proved to be a wealthy source.
Cultural Superiority became a major issue between the U.S. and the Europeans. They both had harsh treatments on Africans and Natives in their county. The Europeans enslaved the Natives and gave them harsh treatments. The U.S. and Europeans had concentrations camps were many Africans and Native Americans died.
The U.S. and the Europeans wanted to better their country and make better civilizations going with wrong moral decisions. The U.S and European foreign policy use indirect government, want materials, and have cultural superiority. Undergoing cultural superiority, social Darwinism, and finding and fighting for raw materials depends on the means of achieving this goals. The United States and Europeans meant well, but did not do good moral decisions.
U.S. and European Foreign Policy
ReplyDeleteThe United States and European foreign policy towards other countries took place around the early twentieth century. The United States’ and Europe’s idea of foreign policy differ because of the rewards from gaining a country can increase their chances of taking over other countries and idea of Social Darwinism provides as a goal post to the U.S. and Europe. The United States gained control of several countries in order to obtain their supplies such as Puerto Rico’s Panama Canal, Hawaii and Cuba’s sugar, and Philippine’s gateway to China. Europe wanted to take over several parts of Africa such as Congo in order to gain gold, diamonds, and rubber. Foreign policy can aid the U.S. and the Europeans in committing themselves to imperialism.
The United States wanted to expand their new markets by obtaining other countries’ valuable resources. Puerto Rico’s Panama Canal provided the U.S. an easier trade route from the western part of America to Eastern Europe. Alaska shared their oil, timber, and minerals to the U.S. (The Americas) After the United States gained control of Cuba, the U.S. used the mass production of sugar of Cuba to sell to other countries in order to gain more money. The U.S. also used Hawaii’s sugar for mass production, but Hawaii provided more of an offer by letting the U.S. use their islands as naval base and a fueling station so that the U.S. can increase their military strength. Unlike Cuba, Puerto Rico, and Hawaii, the U.S. only used the Philippines as a gateway to China’s markets. The U.S. wanted to import products in and out of China using the Philippines and their new naval base in Hawaii. Obtaining countries gave the United States a helping hand of achieving imperialism.
Economic, political, and social forces accelerated the Europeans to take over land in all parts of the globe. (World History) The Europeans expanded their imperialism by dividing and taking over African countries such as Congo. The Europeans craved Africa’s rich land of gold, diamonds, and rubber. Taking over southern Africa made diamonds and gold difficult to take due to the fact that the Boers guarded the priceless resources. However, technological advantages such as the steam boat and the Maxim machine gun aided the Europeans in taking over southern Africa. Therefore, as the result of the Boer War, the British won the war and controlled the Boers. The British also changed the political, social, and economic lives of the people they conquered. (World History) Unlike the United States, the Europeans focused more on taking over countries rather than the products and resources that they receive.
The idea of Social Darwinism inspired the United States and the Europeans to expand their Empire. The original idea of Social Darwinism came from an English naturalist, Charles Darwin, which stated the theory of biological evolution can only surpass through natural selection. Later on, nations began to translate the idea of Social Darwinism into the idea of stronger nations that can fight for survival can enjoy wealth and success and became considered superior to other nations. (World History) Social Darwinism became one of the primary objectives of the United States and the Europeans at the time. The U.S. and the Europeans took the idea of Social Darwinism and used it to gain control and place foreign policy over other countries. The U.S. posted the Platt Amendment in order to set provisions upon Cuba such as the U.S. gaining the right to intervene with Cuba’s foreign affairs. (The Americas) After the British gained control of southern Nigeria, the British gave a rather indirect rule and protectorate over the Niger River delta. (World History) So far, the idea of Social Darwinism remained as a guideline for the U.S. and the Europeans.
As a result, placing foreign affairs and government rules can help keep the captured nations intact can also prevent a rebellion from happening. The United States’ and Europe’s idea of foreign policy differ because of the rewards from gaining a country can increase their chances of taking over other countries and idea of Social Darwinism provides as a goal post to the U.S. and Europe. In the end, The United States and Europe accomplished the same task, but took different roads on achieving imperialism.
Foreign Policy in Africa, American, Latin America, and the Philippines differ in ways of shaping the United States but also have some similarities. The Europeans and French wanted direct control of their colonies. The Europeans developed a policy called paternalism and this made them see the Africans as not being able to handle being in control of running a country. By having this policy, Europeans governed people by providing for their need but they did not give them any rights. To make this happen, Europeans brought their own bureaucrats and did not train local people in governing by their methods.
ReplyDeleteThe French established and supported a policy called assimilation. This policy was based on the idea that the local populations would adopt the French culture and soon will become like the them. All of the local schools, courts, and businesses followed after the French institutions. They also noticed the African institutions and culture but considered them as inferior to the French culture. The French abandoned the ideal of assimilation for a few places and settled for a policy of association.
The Philippines and Latin America went by imperialism. This policy allowed the stronger nations to extend their economic, political, and military control over the weaker territories. But all of theses countries foreign policy became a commonwealth to the United States. Their policy also involved having control of other territories of other countries and taking over it. The foreign policy became important because it helped the United States greatly in similar and different ways.

United States vs. Europe
The U.S. took over Latin America and The Philippines. Europe took control over Africa. Culture superiority, social Darwinism, and the excavation for raw were some reasons to take control over these nations. The U.S. and Europe used similar reasons why to take control over other nations, treated them similarly, and used the same government strategy; they both used indirect forms of government to take over. The U.S. and Europe also treated the natives similarly, Europe being much worse though. Under rule of King Leopold II over 10 million Congolese died, while the U.S. took control of The Philippines over 4,000 died.
The U.S. and Europe had similar reasons also in taking control over the other nations. The U.S. wanted to take over Latin America and The Philippines for the sugar that the islands contained. With sugar, the U.S. could expand their markets, thus making more money for the U.S. The U.S. also felt that they were culturally better than Latin America and The Philippines, since they had won more wars and had a better navy. Europe wanted to take over Africa because the land was filled with gold and diamonds. The Europeans felt that they were better than Africans, that’s why in the Berlin conference Africa wasn’t notified about how they are soon to be controlled by Europe. The U.S. and Europe both used indirect forms of government. At first Europe used direct form of government, but it didn’t work so they switched to indirect forms of government. The methods for indirect control are to have local government officials, limited self-rule for the citizens, government institutions that have local rules, and the goal to develop future leaders. Indirect control seemed to be the better solution for The U.S. and Europe. The U.S. and Europe treated the natives the similarly also. Over 4,000 Filipinos died while the U.S. took control, but over 10 million died in the Congo while Europe took over. The conditions for the natives were terrible, people would die daily. The natives were also put into concentration camps, that’s how the number of deaths reached so high.
In conclusion, The U.S. and Europe used similar reasons why to take control over other nations, used the same government strategy, and treated the natives similarly. The U.S. and Europe wanted to control the countries so they can retrieve raw materials. They both used indirect forms of government and both treated the natives terribly. The U.S. and Europe used many of the same policies.

European and U.S.
European foreign policy and U.S. foreign policy show many similarities and differences. They both deal with issues that pertain to a way that shows how the world deals with foreign policy. European foreign policy was enforced in Africa, and U.S. foreign policy was enforced in Latin America and the Philippines.
Foreign policy in the U.S. and Europe is similar in many ways. The reason why they wanted foreign policy was so that they could have cultural superiority, raw materials, and social Darwinism. Both showed harsh treatment in foreign policy. All of this led to greed and power. With time all of these things helped both Europe and the U.S.
Both the U.S. and Europe had different reason for foreign policy as well. The U.S. wanted foreign policy for three main reasons. New markets, with new markets the U.S. would be able to gain more money in Latin America and the Philippines. The U.S. also saw naval bases and fueling stations in these areas. Naval bases and fueling stations would help in making the U.S a stronger force when war came near. Europeans wanted foreign policy in Africa, because Africa had lots of gold and diamonds. They also wanted Christianity in Africa.
From having foreign policy in Europe and U.S. this helped make them a great power. They both had more options with foreign policy. They were able to become more powerful with it. Foreign policy is a great policy to have because it makes countries stronger and helps them out.
Foreign Policy: U.S. Vs. Europe
ReplyDeleteDuring the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, foreign policy was a tough compromise. Both European and American officials had there own idea of what foreign policy should be in Africa, the concept of imperialism, government, and treatment of natives became issues both countries spoke about. Both Europe and United States believed in imperialism in Africa. They had different beliefs on what type of government should be ran in Africa, but had similar understandings, they both wanted control. During this process, the Europeans and Americans had certain agreements when it came to treatment of natives, but they didn't show the same judgments in the end.
The concept of imperialism is the idea that one more powerful nation would take over another weaker nation. Both the Europeans and Americans had been strong supporters of imperialism. The two powerful nations felt they had the right and obligation to overrule Africa. Africa became an area known for diamonds and gold. Every nation wished to have a part of such a wealthy area, but the trick was organization. Without the United States and Europe using those methods of organization, they wouldn't get anywhere. Imperialism wouldn't be an option without there strong navy's, and powerful governments.
One of the ways the United States and Europe differed in taking over Africa was with government. The United States had the idea of an indirect government. This meant that they would have control over Africa, but the Natives would work the government like a republic. On the other hand, the Europeans believed that both an indirect and direct government for the natives for Africa would be a good choice. The Europeans just wanted to make sure that there control belonged to them and only them. Once they fought for Africa it was there’s to call territory.
The treatment forced onto the native Africans showed authority and structure. The Europeans didn't believe that Africans should be considered, "real people." They didn't have a constant one language which made it easier for the Europeans to push over and take control. That might have worked for them, but the United States had a different way of dealing with those issues. While the Europeans enslaved Africans and treated them cruelly, the United States treated them as normal people. They gave them the opportunity to be in charge of there own lives. They set up a republican government just so the Africans could live in peace. The United States didn't want to cause problems; they just wanted pieces of Africa to be there for territory and resources. It was all about the diamonds and gold. They didn’t care for the people who occupied Africa, just the ones who wanted the resources Africa provided.
In conclusion, both European and American officials had there own idea of what foreign policy should be in Africa, the concept of imperialism, government, and treatment of natives became issues both countries spoke about. The neediness of Africa's resources and territory became an important aspect of what made up foreign policy. There was an agreement that had to be made, and it was overcome by the Europeans and Americans in the nineteenth and early twentieth century.
The Europeans and United States foreign policy were similar in the fact that they were trying to open new markets, believe themselves to be superior to others. The Europeans and the United States had different ideas on how to go about getting these lands. The Europeans were more brutal; they used guns and killed hundred of thousands of people. The United Sates went about getting land by buying them from other countries.
ReplyDeleteThe Europeans went into South American with new inventions, machine guns and steam powered boats. The steam power boats allowed the Europeans to travel against the current of the rivers in South America. Since the boats allowed the Europeans to navigate better, they also sped up the process of taking over land. The river travel was one of the
Since the “Maxim” (machine gun) was invented in Europe, the South Americans were at a disadvantage. The Europeans used the machine guns in South America and killed thousands of people. Also since all of the European countries were fighting over land, it made the situation more violent. The Europeans were not just fighting with the South Americans they were also fighting each other. This is what started the Boer War, between the Dutch and the British.
The United States wanted to spread democracy and freedom to other countries. Though the United States went about taking over land in a different way then the Europeans it was equally effective. The United States tended to buy the land from other countries. The United States would step in when a situation was “undemocratic” or “hostile.” The United States would have the upper hand since they had better military power. Spain owned Cuba, and when the Cubans rebelled the Spanish put Cubans in concentration camps. Thousands died in these camps due to diseases. This situation helped start the Spanish- American War.
At the end of the Spanish-American War the United States got control of Cuba, Puerto Rico and the Philippines. There were a few misunderstandings between the United States and the Philippines. The Philippines thought that the United States promised the Filipinos freedom. This caused a rebellion in the Philippines.
Though both the United States and Europe had the same motivations and different approaches the outcome was pretty much the same. They caused rebellions, deaths and wars. Both countries got land that would make them more powerful, and bigger and better markets.
Compare and Contrast European Foreign Policy in Africa and American Foreign Policy in Latin America and Pacific Ocean
ReplyDeleteAt the 19th and 20th century, many nations began to fight for expanding and building their empires in the world, in order to conquer the territories. At that time, especially Europe and America were eager to spread their power toward the world. Europe conquered Africa continent and America controlled the Latin America as well as the nations around Pacific Ocean. Then Europe and America became the most powerful nations in the world with using similarities and differences foreign policies such as the forms of government, and the treatment of natives for occupying the nations.
Europe and America used similar foreign policy to conquer Africa, Latin America, and over Pacific Ocean. First, both of them treated harsh toward the nations. For example, when Philippines fought for the independence, America forced Filipinos to live in designated zones, the concentration camp. During Philippine-American war, about 20,000 Filipino rebels died. Similarly, as Leopold tired to conquer the Congo, at least 10 million people Congolese died due to the abuses inflicted during Leopold’s rule. Moreover, America and Europe controlled Africa and Latin America by similar forms of imperialism as if colony, protectorate, and sphere of influence. For example, Britain established a protectorate over the Niger River delta and Cuba became a U.S. protectorate, which meant a stronger power controlled a country affairs. Lastly, America and Europe had same desire to spread their belief superiority in nation. Both of them tried to spread the Social Darwinism in nation.
In contrast, America and Europe used different foreign policy to control the nations. First, America preferred more indirect control, but France and Europe liked more direct control except Britain. America gave the nations limited self-rule such as the Foraker Act and government institution are based on European styles but may have local rules. However, Europe did not give any self-rule and government institutions were based only on European style. Second, they had different reasons for expanding their territories. America wanted to improve their naval power, to get the refueling station, and to expand new market to overseas and Latin America, but Europe wanted to get the gold and diamond and to spread Christianity to the Africa.
In conclusion, the similarities and differences foreign policy between America and Europe helped them to be great nation, and to become the most powerful of nations in the world.
European foreign policy in Africa and American foreign policy in Latin America and the Philippines are both very distinct. Both of these policies have similarities such as the treatment of the Natives as well as Social Darwinism. The European foreign policy concentrated on spreading Christianity and exploiting Southern Africa for their gold and diamonds. Even though there are many differences in the way that these foreign policies are conducted in the end they turn out to be more similar.
ReplyDeleteThe British in Africa and the European foreign policy in Latin America and the Philippines both controlled with indirect control. Both of these foreign policies consisted of them treating the Native citizens of that country in a harsh manner. They both aimed for cultural superiority. They wanted to be the Best country that there is. Social Darwinism is a common factor in these policies. They both thought it was “survival of the fittest.” If they took over other countries they thought that it would prove that they were greater and stronger. Raw materials were being searched for while The European and The United States were taking over other countries.
Foreign policy in Latin America and the Philippines focused on taking over for the military power. They wanted naval bases as well as refueling stations. The United States wanted economic imperialism. The foreign policy proved that they were looking for new markets.
European foreign policy in Africa was partially focused on the spread of Christianity. The Europeans enslaved the Native Africans. Gold and diamonds were being exploited from Southern Africa. The Europeans had technological superiority over the Africans, which led to Africa being conquered.
Both these foreign policies proved to have more harm than good. Both countries were selfish in the way they conducted themselves in taking over other “less powerful” countries. Even though there are many differences in the way that these foreign policies are conducted in the end they turn out to be more similar.
The Europeans policy wanted to control Africa. They wanted Africa also for material things. But they both had policies for the same reasons.
ReplyDeleteEuropean policy wanted to promote Christianity. They also wanted to get gold and diamonds. They wanted to enslave natives, too. They wanted to be in control.
The United States wanted the Latin Americans for new markets. They wanted them for naval bases. They also wanted Latin America for fuel stations. They also wanted to be in control, too.
Both of the countries also wanted the two countries for the same reasons. They culture superiority. They wanted Social Darwinism. They also wanted for raw materials.

There are many differences in European foreign policies and American foreign polocies.American foreign policies consisted of new markets, naval bases, and refueling stations. On the other hand, Europeans policies included going after Africa’s resources and spreading Christianity. Shockingly there are just as many similarities as differences.
Europeans foreign policies had specific goal. Europeans wanted to conquer Africa. First by taking their natural resources such as gold and diamonds. Most importantly, while taking over Africa, the natives were showed know respect. Natives as in people born in Africa, who were in Africa first. After treating natives wrong Europeans enslaved them which, in the long run started slavery.
U.S foreign policies were simple yet not easy. The U.S simply wanted to expand new markets, establish naval bases and fueling stations.

The new period of imperialism which began during the 18th and 19th centuries, which the Europeans were able to command more influence over the economic, political, and social lives of the. The imperialism of Europeans had different forms and methods, resistance and impact in Africa. Which made the European foreign formed their policy, and had an empire building affect Africa. The control of the Africans land, its people, and it resources were gained but the ability of the Europeans.
Imperial management methods consist indirect and direct control, which gave European foreign policy similar reason, government and treatment of natives.
The reasons for its similarity gave a great a great influence in Cultural superiority. This meant other cultural believe they are better and Superior than others. With this, the Europeans had the power to gain more lands and have a vast sorts of technology.
They also had indirect similarity's that the United Stats and Africa had in common. The Indirect control accepted British authority to rule and had a legislative council that included colonial officials. In 1890s, United States began to colonize, with this they had control the Philippines. They also had protectorate of their colonies and Sphere influence. The last similarity of them, where the government's direct control. In Africa, they have enslave the natives and put them in the concentration camps. The Africans died from disease such as small box and lost their control of their lands. The influence from the Europeans and their invasion made the African American suffer from their cutural superiority. According to Roger B. Beck Imperialism is a policy in which one country seeks to extend its authority by conquering other countries or by establishing economic and political dominance over other countries. Imperial management methods consist indirect and direct control, which gave European foreign policy similar reason, government and treatment of natives. With this, the Arfican Americans suffered greatly from the influence of the Europeans and its imperialism.

The U.S. and European foreign policy during the twentieth century influence the way they took over territories and controlled them. U.S. and Europe used imperialism in Latin America, the pacific islands, and Africa for self interests. They controlled their governments, and gave no respect to the natives that lived there. Self interests that the U.S. and Europe had were to help them economically and militarily. The U.S. controls their territories by an indirect approach; however Europe had a mixture of direct and indirect approaches to controlling their territories. What the U.S. and Europe had in common though were the harsh treatments they had towards the natives.
The U.S. self interests that help them economically were new markets, and the Panama Canal. Militarily wise they created naval bases and refueling stations. Europe economically self interests were rubber, gold and diamonds. Interests that they had similar economically were raw materials.
U.S. governed their territories indirectly. They even established local governments in territories such as Puerto Rico and Cuba. Puerto Rico’s government was a commonwealth. Cuba’s was governed as a protectorate. Europe mainly had a direct control over Africa. Europe had a strict militarily rule, and in some areas they used indirect control such as in German East Africa. With indirect control, the ruling nation would pick officials to govern the area.
In conclusion U.S. and Europe used imperialism in Latin America, the pacific islands, and Africa for self interests. They controlled their governments, and gave no respect to the natives that lived there. Self interests that the U.S. and Europe had were to help them economically and militarily. The U.S. now has close connections with Puerto Rico. Wars broke out later on because of slavery racism, which first started in Africa with the Europeans controlling them.
Africans lived hard lives from the Europeans’ Foreign policy, while people in Latin America and the Philippines lived decent lives under the United States foreign policy. Both policies had their similarities and their differences. Both were similar because they had concentration camps. The policies were different by the way the government was controlled. U.S had an indirect control and Europeans had a direct control.
ReplyDeleteAfricans were treated unfairly under the European foreign policy. Africans were put into concentration camps where thousands were killed or died from diseases such as smallpox and malaria. Europeans had direct government control in Africa. Europeans viewed Africans as unable to handle the complex business of running a country. Europeans developed paternalism, which provided for the Africans needs but not giving them rights. In the Berlin Conference there was no African Representative to support them. The Europeans believed in cultural superiority and sought out to spread Christianity. The Europeans wanted Africa because it was enriched with diamonds and rubber.
In Latin America and the Philippines they both had an indirect government held by the United States. The United States foreign policy brought them new markets, naval bases and fueling stations. Cuba became a protectorate, which brought protection to Cuba and Puerto Rico became a common wealth. The Philippines were controlled by the United States but then it became a republic. Concentration camps were developed in the Philippines to stop them from rebelling against the United States and this is where 4,000 Filipinos died.
Both the United States and European foreign policy happened to be based on culture superiority and Social Darwinism. Social Darwinism is the belief that the strongest with thrive while the weaker will perish. The United States wanted to spread a democratic world while the Europeans wanted to spread Christianity. Both the Africans under the Europeans foreign policy and the Filipinos under the United States foreign policy received harsh punishment. Filipinos and Africans were put into concentration camps where thousands died. Both were taken over without their consent.
United States gave the people of Latin America and the Philippines rights, while the Europeans didn’t give Africans a single right, only provided them with their needs. The Europeans had a direct control over Africa by having European leaders take control of the territory. The United States had an indirect control because they had non-American leaders controlling the territory.
In conclusion the Africans lived very hard lives while the people of Latin America and the Philippines lived decent lives. Neither foreign policy were good because the countries were taken over without their consent. The European foreign policy did not benefit the African, while the U.S. foreign policy brought a certain amount of protection to the people of Latin America and the Philippines.

European and American Foreign Policy
Both Europe and the United States believed in imperialism. Both of them believed that since other countries were weaker, they were to be taken over. However, even though both countries believed in imperialism, they differ in many ways such as the reasons why they took over other countries. Since the United States believed that a nation needed a great naval, the U.S took over other countries to build great naval nation. Europeans took over the Africans because they were abundant in diamonds and gold. Both countries took over many countries but they did have some similarities in the way that they took over.
Europe fist began by believing in racism which is the belief that one race is better the others. They also began to believe in Social Darwinism which is the belief that the fittest will survive. These two believes brought them to believe in imperialism which made them take over Africa. They took over Africa because the Africans were abundant in gold and diamonds. Europeans took over by traveling in steamboats which allowed them to travel through rough rivers. Once they reached Africa, the Europeans began to fight the Africans with the first machine guns, the Maxim. Since the Europeans were not vulnerable to malaria, they were to defeat the Africans. Later on the Europeans forced the Africans to work and if they did work they were placed in concentration camps as a punishment.
The United States also believed in imperialism so they began to take over other countries. Puerto Rico, the Philippines, and Hawaii were taken over because the U.S to build new markets. The United States also took over these countries because the y believed that a great nation had a strong Navy. So the United States built naval bases in these countries which allowed them to use them as refueling stations for the American ships. The way that they took over these countries were by making them sign treaties or by forcing them to allow the U.S to conquer them. The Philippines suffered a lot because the U.S placed them in zone where there was poor sanitation, starvation and diseases. These places where concentration camps in which they were put in if they refused to obey U.S soldiers.
Even though Europe and the United States took over other countries for different reasons, they did have some similarities in that way they conquered them. Both Europe and the U.S used concentration camps which allowed them to kill many people. Another similarity between Europe and the United States was their advanced technology. Europe owned the first machine gun called the Maxim. Europe also built steamboats which allowed them to travel through rough rivers. The Navy was the advanced technology that the U.S owned because they believed that great nation needed a Navy. The Navy helped the U.S to conquer many countries and to build naval bases that served as refueling stations.

ReplyDeleteForeign Policy: Compare and Contrast
American and Europeans foreign policies were set forth on other countries. Even though they tried to take over different countries, the foreign policies of the Americans and Europeans were somewhat same but still different. The way the U.S. and Europeans treated the people of Latin America, Philippines, and Africa were different., but they both wanted to expand economically by getting more markets, spreading their culture, and gaining military superiority.
Both U.S. and Europe wanted to get new lands so that they could more markets. The U.S. went to Latin America and Philippines for their cash crops and sugar, Europe went to Africa for cash, crops , gold and diamonds. The U.S. wanted more crops as a source of wealth, so that other countries can spend their money on their goods. The Europeans saw minerals, diamonds, and gold as self wealth.
U.S. saw the Latin Americans and Filipinos as inferiors just like the Europeans saw the Africans. This discrimination was caused by the color of the inferior’s skin, language, and culture. Both countries put the Latin Americans, Filipinos, and Africans in concentration camps. The Europeans were a little more meaner because they enslaved the Africans and treated them badly. The Americans and Europeans wanted to spread their culture of Christianity. With time, some captives did convert to Christianity.
Both countries used the indirect form of government. At the beginning, the Europeans used the direct form of government but they could not rule Africa that way so they changed to the indirect government. Indirect control was better because it relied on the existing political rulers, and the countries were divvied into colonies. Each colony would have a governor which would elect a legislative council and colonial official. This way, the Africans, Filipinos, and Latin Americans could have a say in the government.
I agree with the Foreign policies because a country has to do what ever it can to get better economically. The Americans and Europeans were mostly after goods. They had similar motives such as wealth and power to take over these countries. The Europeans were a little more harsh in how the treated the Africans and the Americans were somewhat passive in how they treated the Latin Americans and Filipinos. If there wasn’t that much resistance, there would have been more peace.

American and European
Foreign Policy
United States and European Foreign policy had similarities as well as differences. American and Europeans believed in imperialism which was the policy in which stronger nations extended their economic, political, or military control over much weaker territories, the United States did this with Latin America and the Philippines and the Europeans with Africa. Both were similar because they took over these places with military force and placed rebels in concentration camps. The differences were that the United States had an indirect control over their territories and the Europeans had a direct control over their African territories.
Latin America and the Philippines were treated much more fairly than Europeans treated the Africans under an indirect government which was held by the United States. Puerto Rico became a commonwealth and Cuba, a protectorate under the United States’ foreign policy, and the United States set up concentration camps in the Philippines to stop rebellions. The United States began to take over these places because of imperialism, for a better navy, more naval bases, refueling stations, and new markets.
Contrary to Latin American and Philippine people, Africans were treated poorly by the Europeans, under a direct government control. The Europeans used a policy called paternalism with that policy the Europeans governed people in a parental way by providing for their needs but not giving them any rights. Many Africans got killed or died from diseases Europeans brought; the Europeans didn’t suffer from that many diseases because they had vaccines.
The foreign policies from both the Americans and Europeans shows how the people were treated either fair or just poorly like the Africans were treated by the Europeans. Under a just indirect control or an unjust direct control.
The 20th century was the new period of imperialism. Africa was dramatically influenced by Europeans foreign policy, because they took their resources, controlled their government, and gave no respect to the natives. Latin America and the pacific islands were influenced by the U.S. foreign policy.
ReplyDeleteThe Europeans had direct control over Africa. Officials came from Europe to govern Africa. Europe went to Africa to also spread Christianity. Europe wanted Africans resources. Africa was abundant with gold and diamonds.
The United States foreign policy in Latin America and the Pacific were indirect control. They way the U.S. governed were by having a local government. The United States main goal was to conquer new markets, naval bases, and refueling stations.
Both of these foreign policies had similarities. The U.S. foreign policy and Europe’s foreign policy both wanted to reach cultural superiority. Both these nations wanted to receive benefits from these other countries.
